Bees Wax Lip Balm

Recently I melted and purified some of my bees wax that I had been gathering. I also purchased some oils, flavorings and empty lip balm tubes to make some homemade lip balm.

I purchased the oils, flavorings and butters from www.LorannOils.com and had them mailed to the house. Lorann offers regular or extra strength flavorings. I chose to use the extra strength flavorings.

Here is a presentation from Yvonne Von Der Ahe with her recipe for lip balm. Her recipe makes almost 45 tubes.

I used her recipe as a template and made smaller batches that produced 6 tubes each (recipes provided at the end of the article).

Making the lip balm is pretty straight forward, but does require a kitchen scale to measure the ingredients to maintain the desired firmness/softness of the lip balm.

Once the ingredients were measured, I put them into an 8oz jelly jar and placed that into a pot of hot water on the stove in a make-shift double boiler.

Once the ingredients were melted, I added flavoring oil to the desired strength and stirred. To aid in transferring the melted ingredients from the jar to the empty tubes I used an eye-dropper (medicine dispenser) to fill the tubes.

I made a total of three batches (6 tubes each) today. Pictured below are the finished product with flavors of: chocolate raspberry, pomegranate and black cherry.

A few notes I made during the process:
Cocoa butter has a strong chocolate flavor. Some recipes use it, some do not. I found it difficult to get the flavoring oil to overcome the chocolate flavor and thus my "Raspberry" lip balm became "Chocolate Raspberry". This probably wouldn't have been the case if I used "refined" or "deodorized" cocoa butter.

The other batches I increased the amount of almond oil and Shea butter and removed the cocoa butter. This allowed the flavoring oil to come through with a stronger scent/flavor without changing the texture.

I have a daughter who will be excited to try this.    And I have the cocoa butter and almond oil already.   Just have to find more flavoring...... but my cocoa butter does have that strong chocolate smell, so maybe we'll just make chocolate lip balm.   Today!!
